On a visit to Uganda in 2002 Donal and Eleanor Herlihy from Cork met with Sisters Mona and Eileen Maher from Tipperary who have been working with Uganda’s poorest citizens for thirty-five years.

When Donal and Eleanor visited a babies home they were enthused by the wonderful work being done with very little money. It struck a chord as Eleanor worked for many years teaching young children in Cork so they decided to do whatever they could to help with the care of young orphaned children. They started by funding the education of 100 orphans and this has now grown to over five hundred students.

Early in 2003, Donal met Fr. Martin McCormack, a Salesian priest from Cork, at a fundraiser. Fr. Martin’s immense enthusiasm and absolute commitment to his charity projects in Swaziland, led to Donal and Eleanor funding the construction of a house in Fr. Martin’s “Hope House” hospice facility. After visiting Swaziland, the Herlihys continued to sponsor projects, including the education of street children from infancy to adulthood.

Donal and Eleanor have formed The Moses Foundation to build on the work already done in Africa and, together with others, to support bigger and better projects touching the poorest of the poor in Uganda and Swaziland.

Each year alone €5000 is required to ensure that all orphans who enter the baby’s home can receive formula milk from birth to 1 year. To help contribute towards this fund Eleanor a talented jewellery designer creates a range of beautiful and unique handmade jewellery pieces and the money raised from the sale of these is sent straight back into The Moses Foundation to ensure that the €5000 required can be reached.

On Friday the 2nd of August Eleanor Herlihy will have a stand along with a number of other businesses at the Kinsale Temperance Hall- Kinsale from 10am to 4pm displaying a range of her fantastic jewellery pieces, be sure to call in and say hallo on the day while also contributing to an excellent cause.
