Road to Kinsale Offering a helping hand to a Syrian family fleeing a humanitarian crisis
Posted by Kinsale Advertiser on Tuesday 17 September 2019

Road to Kinsale is a Community Sponsorship project initiated by a Kinsale-based group linked together by a desire to offer a helping hand to those displaced in one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises of our time.

This project started as a response to the Syrian crisis but at its core, is about a great community that has so much to give. From a cake sale in Temperance Hall that raised €2,150 to a summer fete that brought the town together for a day of fun and games at Saile, these fundraising events are helping the town to shine and show our true colours.

Saile, Kinsale Sports and Community Centre, was the ideal location to build an event that represented a coming together of people giving their time and talent to support a worthy cause. Drumming, disco, climbing walls, bouncy castles, toddler town, games, science shows, art installation, cake sales and so much more – So Long Lughnasa may well be the start of an annual tradition. The event raised €7,275 to support the Syrian refugee crisis in a very real way. Businesses donated time and products, people gave up hours and expertise, and over 500 people showed up to support the event.

Speaking about the event, a Road to Kinsale spokesperson said ‘The Road to Kinsale group was overwhelmed with the support and generosity shown by the community. We’ve always known that Kinsale was a great place to live, located in one of the most scenic parts of the country. But what makes Kinsale so special is its heart and kindness – created by the people who live in this small corner of the world. What an amazing community to welcome a family into who are fleeing devastation. We can offer support and shelter but more than that we can offer a hand of friendship and the opportunity to be part of a great community’.

Road to Kinsale will be continuing to run events over the coming weeks to raise money for this worthy cause. On 22 September they’ll be asking you to put on your runners and walk, jog or run the Cork Mini Marathon for Road to Kinsale. On the evening of 7 October, renowned Child Psychologist, Catherine Hallissey will host a workshop – How to Raise a Happy Child – and is donating all ticket sales to the Road to Kinsale fund.

Within the coming months, a family, that have been Garda vetted and approved by the Irish Government, will come to Ireland and will be integrated into the community in Kinsale, rather than enter a traditional emergency reception and orientation centre.

This fundraising to provide an arrival & settlement plan for the family on arrival. The ambition is that within 24 months, the family will become part of Kinsale’s vibrant community and be in employment.
