The Committee of the 2012 Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk presented a cheque for €102,849 to Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society, in the Temperance Hall on Tuesday 15th May. Fred Tracey, Mayor of Kinsale thanked everyone for their hard work and generous donations to fundraise this tremendous amount
"We are overwhelmed by this incredible amount raised by so many people in these difficult times for Action Breast Cancer and wish to thank all our participants, donors, sponsors, volunteers and everyone who got involved with this fantastic community project here in Kinsale on 4th March" said Jackie Dawson, Chairperson, Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk Committee.
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the Irish Cancer Society, Stephanie Casey, Community Fundraising Manager said: "The objective is to empower individuals and communities to increase breast cancer awareness, promote healthy living and raise funds for Action Breast Cancer through a fun and rewarding experience. On behalf of Action Breast Cancer, I would like to thank the Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk and everyone involved with it for this massive boost to our programme, as we continue to strive for a world without breast cancer", she added.

The Pink Ribbon Walk is a national fundraising initiative which organises sponsored charity walks in locations around the country in aid of Action Breast Cancer. Since 2009, The Pink Ribbon Walks in Ireland have raised over €500,000 for Action Breast Cancer. ‘It’s Not The Wizard’, says George...
 
    A hundred and fifty people, from all walks of life, listened, with total attention, as economist, TV pundit and ex TD, George Lee gave his opinion of the present economic situation and how we must go forward to prosperity again. They were at the first Breakfast meeting of Kinsale and District Lions Club in The Trident Hotel on May 3rd.
    George extolled that, whilst we must accept our own responsibility for the situation we are now in, it is the time to be positive and win new markets that will provide our stability in the future.
George’s theme was that the best companies in the world do not succeed just by looking for profits, but by ensuring the excellence of their goods and services and believing in their people. He quoted many emerging Irish businesses that were already succeeding in this. He likened his brief sojourn in the Dail to a trip to see the Wizard of Oz, where he had been looking to the oracle (government) to be able to solve the problems. But he emphasised that it will be the talent of the Irish people that will put us on the road to recovery, however long it may take.
    In general, we do not approach affairs as, say, the Germans do for instance. But the Irish have always been able to succeed by using their novel and intrinsic skills to overcome difficulties and to progress in their own way. George listed surprisingly new and successful ventures emerging from Irish minds around the world, often helped by an Irish Diaspora that was enthusiastic to help. Breakfast plates were made silent as George spoke fluently and knowledgably in his hard- hitting and pertinent assessment. He insisted that it will be we ourselves, the imaginative and optimistic people of Ireland, thinking originally and pursuing our best ideas, who will lead us to an era of prosperity again. The Wizard of Oz will not have the answer!
    The proceeds from the Breakfast will go towards a Youth Enterprise seminar for gap year students in September and to providing laptops for young enthusiasts in the Coderdojo initiative which develops programming skills. Both are fully supported by the Lions Club.

Heineken Kinsale 7s 2012 Final Report.

The 24th HK7s was another major success, with teams coming from around the globe to compete in this annual rugby summer festival. The weather was very good for the entire weekend and players and spectators enjoyed plentiful sunshine on Saturday and Sunday. Kinsale attracted a good few Rugby celebs over the weekend with Paul Wallace and Frankie Sheehan enjoying the rugby on Saturday. On Sunday Liefimi Mafi and his family came down to meet relatives and friends and support the event. Peter O'Mahony and Simon Zebo enjoyed the rugby and chatted with friends and family and supporters for the afternoon.

Following their recent All-Ireland titles in hurling and camogie, it was the turn of the golfers of Kinsale Community School to win another All-Ireland title for the school when they emerged victorious from the inaugural staging of the Irish Schools’ Junior Strokeplay Championship.

Kinsale secured their place in the finals by recording a comprehensive victory over St Brendan’s of Killarney in the provincial finals and so travelled to Strandhill as Munster champions where they competed against the other provincial champions.

Kinsale posted a nett total of 220 strokes in the final which was played in blustery conditions in Strandhill, Sligo. This score was was five better than their nearest competitors so team members Cathal Butler, Gary Ward and John Murphy can be justifiably proud of their achievement. Acknowledgement must also be made to the players’ caddies on the day who were Shane O’Connell, Aaron Kingston and James Bohan.

The team returned to a rapturous welcome and reception in the school last Friday April 27th, when school principal, Seán Ó Broin, congratulated the players, caddies and mentors Ger Hogan and George Hayes on their success. Mr Ó Broin commented on how both in sporting and academic areas the school continues to succeed at the very highest level.

The 23rd Kinsale Vintage and Classic Motor Club International Rally was recently launched at the Blue Haven Hotel in Kinsale. The event takes place from the 11-13th May and will be in aid of the Cork City Hospital Children's Club. More details at www.kinsalevintageclub.com.

The recent Kinsale Lions Charity Cycle was a great success, with 220 cyclists taking part. The highly organised event left Kinsale Rugby grounds at Rathmore, and followed a 100km route via Old Head, Timoleague, Seven Heads to Clonakilty and back to Kinsale by the more direct route.  A welcome lunch stop was provided at the GAA grounds in Clonakilty.
This event will enable Kinsale Lions to send a number of seriously ill children from Cork Hospitals to Eurodisney for a short holiday - and to assist the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoire who had given such great care and attention to the late Séamus Keating, the founding President twenty one years ago of Kinsale Lions Club.
A notable former patient of the Rehab is Michael Murphy of Kinsale, son of Cork County Councillor Kevin Murphy. Michael is wheelchair bound, but using a specially designed flat bed tricycle manages to achieve normal cycling speeds with arm power only.

Kinsale Lions Club are also pleased to announce that Mr. George Lee will be speaker at their Breakfast Meeting at the Trident Hotel, on Thursday 3rd. May. The event will start at 8am, and finish at 9.15am, both times guaranteeed.
Mr Lee is well known as an economics and business commentator, and presenter on TV and Radio of RTE's "The Business".  Famously, two years ago he was elected to Dáil Eireann in a bye-election, but resigned in "total frustration" after six months to resume his broadcasting career.  Mr.Lee will not discuss what has gone before, but look forward to where Ireland might go from here. Attendance costs 25 euro, or a table of ten 200 euro.  Bookings should be made to Trident Hotel, Kinsale, or to any Lions Club Member.

Padraig Fitzgerald & Gerard Timmons of the Kinsale Peace Project, are delighted to announce that Christina Noble, who works with the street children in Vietnam, will be their guest speaker on Thursday April 26th, when she will be giving an evening talk at the Friary Centre, Kinsale, starting at 8pm.

Admission is free but donations are welcome on the night. Padraig and Ger hope to bring her to visit several schools on that day, in which Christina (affectionally known as "Mama Tina") will tell about her amazing work in Vietnam with the abandoned street children and about her amazing life, about which she has written several books and appeared on many TV programs over the years. This promises to be an exciting time, in which the people of Kinsale will get to meet an amazing person who, despite all the odds in her own personal life, has made something very positive happen in the world!

Plus there’s a mouth-watering feast on the menu with a focus on one of our favourite guilty pleasures: food. It’s all being done in the best possible taste...

 Kinsale Arts Festival aims to make a ‘Virtue out of Vice’ for audiences this July. We’re hearing plenty about vice these days with corruption, scandals and sordid goings on. But what about virtue? Does that get a look in at all? What is virtuous in our society today? These questions and more are being asked at the Kinsale Arts Festival this year as artists, actors, writers and thinkers come to the beautiful seaside town of Kinsale to get to the heart of the matter and entertain the thousands of people attending the nine day festival.
 
The Festival team also looked at what Kinsale is most famous for (apart from atmospheric pubs, eclectic shops, excellent accommodation, adventurous sailing and all that stunning scenery) and came up with what is both a guilty pleasure and a virtual necessity – food. An entire strand of the 2012 programme will offer audiences a delicious taste of Kinsale, with a twist! This will be the eighth year of the Kinsale Arts Festival, one of Irelands’ favourite summer festivals. The dates are July 7 to 15, and limited advance tickets have just been released on www.kinsaleartsfestival.com. Full programme will be announced in May.
 
Guest Artistic Director Gemma Tipton says she chose the themes because “who doesn’t like eating and drinking, and dabbling in a little vice? Plus we all feel virtuous after enjoying arts events, so we decided to wrap it all up in one delicious – and intriguing – package for summer 2012,” adding “I think the programme should be just the tonic we all need.”
 
The full programme including art, drama, music, literature, free family events and workshops will be launched in May, but a sneak preview of confirmed talent includes: the Leviathan Political Cabaret, former Irish Times Editor now crime writer Conor Brady, Mark Patrick Hederman Abbot of Glenstal, Eden Project founder Tim Smit in conversation with Lord David Puttnam, Dragon’s Den star Sean O’Sullivan, pop comedy with Frisky and Mannish, Shakespeare as you’ve never seen him before in Text Messages, and a special mini classical festival-within-a-festival as international stars Roustem Saitkoulov, Gerald Garcia and Jan Hendrik Rübel, join Irish performers Elizabeth Cooney, Finghin Collins and Carol McGonnell for some unforgettable listening.
 
Plus there’s a murder mystery dinner at the stunning Ballinacurra House, food workshops with Fishy Fishy’s Martin Shannahan, and an architectural project to build Kinsale again – out of cake and jelly... It’s the tastiest fun you can think of. The Festival team also announced today that this year’s Festival Hub will be the Pop Up Playhouse, Ireland’s only inflatable arts venue.
 
To celebrate the growth in audiences and maturity of the festival that now attracts over 15,000 people from all around the country and internationally, the title has changed to Kinsale Arts Festival. Reflecting on the rationale for the change of name Gemma said “Well, it’s always been more than just a week and this year it’s fuller of flavour then ever. Sunday 4th March was a very special day for Kinsale and the 750 people who participated in the first Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk, their sponsors and supporters, the organising committee and 140 volunteers, as a staggering €100,000 was raised for Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society.

"We are overwhelmed by this incredible amount raised by so many people, particularly in these very difficult times," said Jackie Dawson, Chairperson, Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk Committee.

"Walkers and runners had been out training in January and February, to get fit for the 10km run/walk as well as actively fundraising online and on their sponsorship cards. On behalf of the Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk Committee, all we can say is a huge 'Thank You' to everyone for their wonderful support and fantastic community spirit."

Following a major promotional drive, Kinsale turned 'pink' for two weeks, with a sea of bright pink flags and bunting flying throughout the town, funded entirely by our 'Pink Partner' as over 100 local businesses decorated their windows and ran pink promotions leading up to the event.

On the day, there was a fantastic atmosphere, as the bright sunshine highlighted the hundreds of bright Pink Ribbon Walk t-shirts and those in fancy dress costumes. Mayor of Kinsale, Fred Treacy, welcomed everyone to the Town Council Car Park as the event kicked off with a lively warm-up with Saran Crosbie and her 'girls' (including two imposters!) and music by DJ Anthony Collins of the White Lady.

Then, Cara O'Sullivan performed 'Stand up and Fight' which inspired walkers as they headed off on the 10km route. Fred and Irene Treacy, together with Brand Ambassadors, Cara O'Sullivan and Sharon Crosbie, cut the pink ribbon to start the Run and Walk at 12pm.

After the Walk, everyone received a Pink Ribbon walk medal and refreshments were generously provided by the Kinsale Good Food Circle with meat supplied from Barrett's Butchers, soup from Cully & Sully, cupcakes from Blackbird Bakery, fruit from Keelings and a bottle of Tipperary Active water from Gleesons. As Sharon Crosbie entertained everyone, there was a real party atmosphere in the town for the rest of the afternoon.

In the Reflection Area, every participant was given a pink ribbon and asked to write 'I'm walking for (someone' on it. This was a particularly moving part of the day and was both emotional and inspirational for many.

Thanking everyone for getting involved with the Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk, Jackie Dawson said, "We are remembering those we have lost, we are honouring anyone undergoing treatment and we are celebrating with families and friends who have been touched by breast cancer. We are walking for a future without breast cancer.'

The Pink Ribbon Walk is a national fundraising initiative which organises sponsored charity walks in locations around the country in aid of Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society. The objective is to empower individuals and communities to increase breast cancer awareness, promote healthy living and raise funds for Action Breast Cancer through a fun and rewarding experience.

"When I was approached last year by Penny McGowan, who started the Kells Pink Ribbon Walk in 2009, I thought it might be something worthwhile to organise as a group in Kinsale, as well as getting us all out walking after Christmas to raise money for Action Breast Cancer.

"The Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk Committee is made up purely of volunteers who have given up so much of their own time and energy, to organise the event. We all have different skills and lots of energy, so it was a real pleasure to work together. From making bunting, to logistics, sponsorship and promotion as well as recruiting volunteers, registration, administration and finance - there was a job for everyone!

"We would like to acknowledge the support of all participants, sponsors, pink partners, volunteers, the Gardai, Red Cross, Civil Defence, Kinsale Athletics Club and particularly everyone who so generously donated their time and money to helping the Kinsale Pink Ribbon Walk become a successful event.

"The understanding is that participants' registration fee covers the costs of the walk, so every euro raised on their sponsorship card or online goes directly to Action Breast Cancer. Through the sponsorship of refreshments and some other expenses, we were able to donate part of everyone's registration fee to the overall total. It was both a physical and financial commitment but the enthusiasm and solidarity shown here in Kinsale has been phenomenal," added Jackie.

Where Your Money Goes¦

Most recent data from the National Cancer Registry shows that 3225 people were diagnosed with cancer in Cork in 2010. Cancer will affect one in three people during the course of their lifetime however more people are surviving cancer due to more people being diagnosed at an earlier stage and advances in treatment.

The Irish Cancer Society (ICS) has been developing patient care, information and support services for over 20 years and is the leading provider of cancer information in Ireland. In 2011, the ICS provided the following services:

•    Specialist cancer nurses supported 22,120 callers to the ICS National Cancer Helpline in 2011 (Freefone 1800 200 700). 1009 of these calls were from people in Co. Cork.
•    The ICS provided 8,110 nights of care to 2,014 families in 2011. 741 nights of care were provided in Co. Cork.
•    The ICS provided financial aid to the value of over €1,062,281 in 2011. €74,300 worth of financial aid was provided to people in Co. Cork.
•    The ICS distributed over 688,266 cancer information booklets and factsheets to people concerned about cancer across the country in 2011, 54,897 booklets and factsheets were distributed to people in Co. Cork.
•  Daffodil Centres are an extension of the ICS's Cancer Information Services and are the first service of this kind in Ireland. There is a new Daffodil Centre in the Bon Secours Centre, Cork and one is being planned for the Cork University Hospital.
•    The ICS has funded Breast cancer research to the value of €1.7 million in  Irish Universities including University College Cork. This has recently shown some exciting results, including research by Dr Mark Tangney developing 'gene therapy' for breast cancer.

Aoibhinn Lynch age 10 from Summercove N.S.has been judged as the overall winner of the 'Kinsale St Patrick's Art Competition' 2012. Her picture has been made into a poster to promote the festival. She will receive a copy of her work on canvas courtesy of Canvas Works Kinsale as her prize as well as a €75 voucher for the Kinsale OEC.

The winner of the 4-7 year old age group was Ryan O'Donnell age 7 who will also receive a canvas of his art work and a €75 voucher for the KOEC.

Second Place/Special merit are:

They will each receive a €25 for Cooleez Children's Boutique in Kinsale.

The girls of Kinsale Community School equalled last year’s achievement of the school’s hurlers when they won a senior All-Ireland title by beating St Mary’s of Midleton last Saturday on a scoreline of 3-6 to 2-4.

Under the dedicated guidance of teachers Sinéad O’Donovan and Catriona Leahy the Kinsale girls got off to a flying start and were well on top of their opponents in the first half with goals coming from Niamh Sheehan and Linda Collins to leave the Kinsale side leading at half time on a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-0.

However, in what was definitely a game of two halves, the Midleton team started the second half at a blistering pace and quickly racked up two goals. Kinsale responded by bringing on Amy Harrington who scored Kinsale’s third goal. The Midleton side increased their attack and racked up two goals in quick succession but a sterling performance from backs Aoife Keating, Ashling Moloney and Chloe O’Callaghan meant that the Kinsale side maintained their lead to win the school’s first ever All- Ireland camogie title.

At a special school assembly Principal Seán O Broin welcomed the victorious team to the rapturous applause of the school community and paid tribute to their hard work and dedication. Team captain Jacinta Crowley spoke to the spirit of camaraderie that exists in the team and of her pride in the team’s achievements – being Munster and All-Ireland champions. Sinéad O’Donovan paid tribute to the work done in the local camogie clubs of Ballinhassig, Courcey Rovers and Sliabh Rua and made special mention of Joe McGrath who generously gave the team sliotars and a new hurley for each member of the panel. As Sinéad pointed out, it was a genuine team effort, both on and off the pitch, which contributed to the school’s victory. 

Principal O Broin also had good news to announce to the school with the confirmation that the Dept. of Education and Skills has recognised the need for an extension that will double the size of the school which will go ahead in the year 2014.  

- Kinsale RNLI Coffee Morning Pays for Four New Lifejackets

Kinsale RNLI sent out an SOS of their own last Friday when they asked the people of the town to ‘Scoff Our Scones’ to help raise funds for new lifejackets.   The RNLI Coffee Morning in the Temperance Hall raised €1,630 – enough to pay for four of the new, specially designed lifejackets which will be delivered to every RNLI lifeboat station in Ireland and the UK by the end of this year when the existing ones reach the end of their recommended operational life.
On behalf of all the volunteer crew of Kinsale RNLI, Chief Fundraiser Ewen Tubridy thanked all those who helped make the event such a success.  She said, “Kinsale RNLI is incredibly lucky in the support we receive from our community.  Thanks to the generosity of the Kinsale Credit Union, Eli Lilly, the Kinsale Rugby Club and Fishermen, and the Kinsale Community Choir, all the volunteer crew of our RNLI lifeboat Miss Sally Anne (Baggy) already have new lifejackets.  We are now in the fortunate position of being able to help RNLI stations in more remote areas to ensure that every RNLI lifeboat protecting our coastline is equipped to the same high standard.”
The design of the new lifejackets is the result of two years of collaboration between RNLI technical experts and volunteer crew. Drawing on the wealth of experience gained in emergency and rescue situations, the innovative lifejackets incorporate design features which will mean improved safety and increased efficiency and effectiveness.

- Champion Oarsmen Row In Behind  Kinsale RNLI

Kinsale’s volunteer RNLI crew received an unexpected windfall recently thanks to two champion oarsmen, John O’Brien and Paddy Lawton.  John and Paddy visited the RNLI lifeboat station where they met volunteer crew members and presented helmsman Mark Lewis with a cheque for €2,290. 
John and Paddy, who between them hold multiple All Ireland rowing medals, were asked to start up a Spirit of Kinsale Rowing Club by many of the youngsters they had trained over the years.  Despite receiving enthusiastic local backing, the pair were thwarted by red tape and were unable to gain the necessary authorisation from the governing body to open their club.  Paddy Lawton said, “It was very disappointing both for us and for all the people who had asked us to start the club and who had donated money to get it up and running.   We did out best but it was not to be, so we decided the next best thing was to make sure the money stayed in the town and did some good there.  Anyone who rows or sails would want the RNLI there for them, so it was an obvious choice for us.”
Accepting the cheque on behalf of the volunteer crew of the RNLI, Mark Lewis said, “I used to row with the lads myself and I know how much hard work and dedication they put into it, so it’s a big honour for us to be picked to receive such a generous donation.  They can be sure it will be put to good use.”
At the same presentation in the RNLI lifeboat station, Nuala O’Reilly accepted a cheque from John and Paddy for €2,290 on behalf of Kinsale Community Hospital.
