Dozens of people in Kinsale will 'sleep-out' this coming Friday to Shine a Light on Homelessness in Ireland in an event organised by Breakbulk Media in support of Focus Ireland. Breakbulk Events & Media is an international company with a small office in Kinsale.
The Breakbulk Cares initiative kicks off on Friday 13th October, when the team will be leaving the comfort of their homes for one night to sleep-out to "Shine a Light" on homelessness in Ireland in support of Focus Ireland. This is the first time for the sleep-out in Kinsale and we are delighted to be joining business leaders and communities all across Ireland who are also sleeping out in support of this very worthy initiative.
The housing crisis in Ireland has caused a homeless epidemic and, sadly, 1 in 3 homeless people in Ireland are children. The number of homeless families has increased 27% in the last year and homelessness in Ireland is at the highest number on record at nearly 8000 homeless. The fastest growing age group for homelessness is children under 4. There have also been several deaths related to homelessness this year. With the rising housing prices, more and more are facing this possibility every day. There are already over 30 friends, family and community members registered to sleep out beside The Temperance Hall in Kinsale from 6pm on Friday 13th October and we are hopeful that more people will join us. We have been blown away by the generosity and kindness from the whole town.
The local businesses have gotten behind it, from the donation of wonderful raffle prizes, to offers of refreshments throughout the event, to printing services and generally helping to promote the event. As ever the good people of Kinsale have thrown their weight behind it and we are moved by the amazing good will.
All proceeds will go to Focus Ireland, giving people access to information, housing, childcare, and a range of education services to prevent homelessness.
